It finally happened, guys. I got old. Or, rather, I am old. The whole thing started about a week ago when my Gen Z colleague referred to the 1990s as the “olden days.” At first, I laughed, but I quickly realized that she was right. She’s right! The 1990s are over 30 years old! (Yes, I did say, “Holy Smokes!” I’m not sure if this proves I’m a stiff or just that I’m getting older.)
The realization that I was living in the past was a shock, but it also made me think about how great that period was. Tamagotchis! Lunchables! Boy Meets World And the Fashion! In my humble opinion, the fashion for men and women was amazing: acid-washed denim, neon windbreakers and crimped hair were all over the place. Corduroy is a clothing item from the 1990s that has made a huge comeback.
Corduroys are a retro-chic staple. They’re comfortable, stylish, and, yes, a little nostalgic. Cords are not only a chic alternative to jeans but also a good way to avoid rigidity. It’s a sophisticated look to wear that thick ribbed material on your body, whether it’s in the form of pants, a shirt, or even a corduroy suit. I’ve included some examples below for you to live out your ’90s fantasies. Drop Weezer’s ‘The Blue Album‘ into your Walkman and pop some Eggo waffles into the toaster. Enjoy the edit below.
DANDY DE MAR
Dandy Del Mar is a brand with a more ’70s vibe than ’90s grunge. However, its latest releases — Corsica Corduroy Button-Down ($159) and Corsica Corduroy Pant$149– are pure corduroy bliss. The button-down is made from 8-Wale Corduroy and can be worn as an outer layer or fitted top. It also works well as a centrepiece for any classic outfit. The pants, made of the same Italian fabric, feature a tailored fit through the legs and a drawstring to tie it all together. The shirt and trousers combo is both luxurious and loungey but still retains an elegant look that can be worn in any situation. To add a little extra flair, you can top off the outfit with the Corsica Corduroy Bucket Hat ($89). Anyone who knows me will know that I am a Dandy Del Mar #brandloyal customer. With the release of this new Long Sleeve Cord Set with Bucket Cap combo, my boy’s loyalty is even greater.
BUCK MASON
Buck Mason was established in 2013 by Sasha Koehn, a neighbour, and Erik Allen. They initially opened a 350-square-foot garage in Venice, California, off Abbot Kinney Boulevard. The pair became obsessed with the quality of their products and began working with a local factory to produce small batches using traditional manufacturing methods. Buck Mason has grown to be a major apparel brand in the US, with more than two dozen brick-and-mortar stores. In terms of their corduroy venture, Buck Mason has a rustic, grounded style. Buck Mason’s Stretch Cord Standard Jeans ($138) come in four earthy shades. Combine it with an old Pearl Jam tee to get that rocker look of the ’90s Ethan Hawke.
BONOBOS
Bonobos is confident in their claim that they are “a company unlike any other”. Their entire model revolves around the idea that men are not all alike. They offer a wide range of choices based on body type and style. Bonobos’ corduroy pants are priced at a great price, and they also provide their on-demand styling advice. Corduroy 5 Pocket Pants by Bonobos are available in seven different colours and three different fit options: Slim, Athletic and Tailored. They cost $119. If you want something more stylish, try the Italian Stretch Corduroy Pants, which are only $69 and have an elegant, sophisticated “oh, I’m spending the weekend at Paris“ feel to them. ).
PERFECT CLOTH
Wes Anderson has a unique visual style. He is also known for his limited colour palette, hipster aesthetic, and exploration of family dynamics. When I think about his debut in the early 1990s (you know, the “olden days”), I picture him looking cool as hell in Corduroy.
You better believe that I found a Wes Anderson-style Corduroy Suit for you to enjoy here at TQE. Enter Proper Cloth’s Corduroy Stretch Waverly Suit ($795), made of rich, velvety Corduroy from the famed Duca Visconti Mill near Milan. The suit comes in five colours and features an 8-wale construction. This enhances both the casual feel of the suit and the way the fabric drapes on the body. Pair Proper Cloth Waverly Suit with a white oxford shirt and vintage sneakers to shout “action!”
PERCIVAL
Percival, a British clothing brand based in East London, is inspired by David Lynch, Japanese woodblock prints, matte black marble, minimalist architecture and monochrome. Percival has a wide range of inspirations. Colour me impressed.) Percival is the place to go if you want the ’90s Britpop look and want to be like the cheeky Oasis lads. I was drawn to the pleated Denton Jacket ($270), which has a thicker and bolder corduroy. I was also smitten by the ZIP Overshirt (255), which has a thinner corduroy. Multitudes of people. This brand has a variety of options! If you are looking for a pair of well-made, good, old-fashioned corduroys that are made to last, then look no further than Straight Leg Pant ($180). These slacks are a perfect complement to any outfit. They have a cool, no-frills look.
