Hilary Duff is the best person to look at if you want to know what Lizzie McGuire will be wearing when she reaches her 30s.
The former Disney star was spotted in Los Angeles on April 16 wearing the quintessential outfit formula for millennials. Before Gen Z made us (rightly) addicted to wide-leg denim and crop tops, the midiskirt was a staple in every wardrobe.
In the 2010s, a white tank with a patterned skirt was an easy way to create a stylish look. You may remember that everyone had the same leopard-print skirt in 2018. We really believed we ate that one because we did.

Duff’s outfit formula doesn’t involve any math. As TikTok style hacks continue to get more complex and Gen Z continues its search for controversial Y2K fashion relics in the Y2K era, Duff is returning to a simple outfit formula.
While shopping, the 37-year-old actor tucked her white tank into a colourful midi skirt. Duff modernized her look by adding trendy accessories in chocolate tones, such as patent leather knee-high boots, a slouchy bag, and a shearling-lined jacket. She kept the rest of her look classic with gold jewellery and a French manicure.
A white tank top or a long skirt is one of the most versatile items a woman could have in her closet. In just one week, Duff has demonstrated various ways to wear both pieces.
Duff’s latest shopping trip was the weekend before. She paired a black skirt with a red V-neck top and red flats. Fast-forward to April 17, and she repurposed that same red sweater, pairing it with a white top and nude leather trousers. She finished the look off with a black buckle.
At first glance, these looks reminded me of an adult Lizzie McGuire. The preteen style icon didn’t shy away from patterns or wearing her favourite pieces again (IYKYK).
It’s been 5 years since Disney cancelled a Lizzie McGuire reboot, in which Lizzie would have faced love and career challenges as she approached her 30s. Duff said Disney’s PG rating was at odds with the creative vision of her team for the show.
Duff wrote on Instagram in February 2020, “I would be doing a great disservice to all of you if I limited the reality of a 30-year-old’s journey under the ceiling PG rating.” It’s important that her future chapters are as authentic and relatable as [Lizzie]’s experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life.
We’ll have Duff forever, a style icon who is relatable in her rights.
