You have nothing to wear? This is something I do on a regular basis. I only wear most of my clothes a couple of times. Either because I’m trying out new styles or because they were purchased for a specific event. With too many clothes in my closet, I decided to try out the clothing rental world.
What’s not love about that? The internet can help those who don’t have roommates anymore. Renting clothes is easy. For a monthly fee (which is very reasonable), you can get anything you like delivered to your home.
After trying two of the top brands in the fashion rental space—Armoire and Nuuly—I thought what better way to compare them honestly than an old-fashioned Throwdown? See how they compare.
Armoire has a customizable interface with filters for Category, Weather, and Occasion. Nuuly, on the other hand, does not offer a great recommendation feature based on interests.
The Players
Nuuly is a brand belonging to the URBN Group, which also owns mega-brands such as Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. The group wants to offer its customers unique shopping experiences.
Armoire’s selection of Spring dresses is on display. By choosing from the beautiful selections, I can stay current with every season.
1: Variety + Quality
Armoire: Okay, the first thing I look for in a clothing rental service is the brands and options available. Armoire is a great option for this. You can find some amazing deals on designer brands like Rag &Bone, Equipment, White + Warren, and Joie. The cardigan I bought was the most adorable. It was not only super versatile for my work wardrobe but also of amazing quality. It did not feel worn.
Nuuly Although Nuuly’s brand lineup isn’t as impressive, it still has some cool brands, such as AGOLDE, Farm Rio, and other hip names. Nuuly was a site that initially caught my eye. However, when I looked at the items, I found there wasn’t nearly as much choice as I had hoped. There were only a few AGOLDE styles and not the popular jeans or shorts I had hoped for. Unfortunately, their quality was not up to par. The clothes I received in my closet looked very old, which was a bit of a shock. They also had an odd air freshener scent. No thanks.
2 User Experience
Armoire: This interface is amazing. It’s very personal, making it feel like you’re looking through your best friend’s closet on a Sunday afternoon. It’s easy to find exactly what you need, with a section dedicated to Top Recommendations and customization options such as category, weather, or occasion. I found some cute basics to wear at work and a dress that was perfect for a wedding. Everyone can find something, and it’s easy to locate.
It truly has a very beautiful website. The site is designed beautifully, with great colours and fonts. It almost feels like it’s a premium brand. There isn’t much customization aside from the “closet” to save your favourite items. It’s a lot of work to figure out what you want to order. You’ll have to sort yourself and go through hundreds of products to find what you need. Although they are there, it’s almost impossible to locate them. Who has the time for that?
3 Value
Armoire: Let’s break down the basics for those who are new to clothing rental. Renting clothes may not be cheap, but in the end, it is a very cost-effective option. You can keep the items you rent until your next order arrives. Nuuly does not offer this, so you will never be left without clothes. You can choose between three membership plans in terms of price: unlimited items/month, seven items/month ($13/item net), or four items/month ($22/item net). It’s a great deal. Rag & Bone’s cardigan, which I spoke about earlier, retails at $695. !
To sweeten the deal, you can get free shipping and returns. (They are easy to do – return everything in the original bag).
Nuuly Unlike Armoire, Nuuly does not offer unlimited options. The plan costs $88 per month (which is $96 after tax). It includes free shipping, returns and the option to pause at any time. You don’t offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to subscription options, so I can’t say that the cost per item is worth it.
Final Verdict: Armoire
This was not much of a competition. Both brands offer great clothing for a good price. Still, Armoire wins the contest with its wide selection of premium brands, quality items, personalized user experience and three cost-effective subscription options.
