The Rugby Shirt Edit: Where To Find The Staples For That Perfect, Preppy Look

Our team works hard to find and tell you about the best products on the internet. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links. Our editorial staff is independent, and we recommend products that we truly believe in.

Rugby is on my mind all the time, and it’s not because I watch the Australian spin-off Survivor. I don’t know how I could throw a stone without hitting a fashion collection that used it as a model. But as a lover of the collegiate style, I am not complaining. The rugby shirt is a spring staple that retailers across the board have adopted. Its medium weight and oversized fit are perfect for the changing temperatures of the shoulder season.

If you are a rugby fanatic or, like me, don’t even know the rules, apart from that players tackle each other, here are eight of my favourite, most bold and stripiest rugby shirt recommendations. Let’s start a scrum.

Rugby Layering Sweatshirt

The Rugby Layering Sweatshirt by B by Ben Sherman is the perfect layer to add extra warmth if you’re still feeling that winter chill. The red and black stripes on the hem and sleeves complement the marine colour beautifully, and the front pouch pocket is a nice touch. This one is a steal, especially for the reduced price.

Rugby Shirt with Stripes

J. Crew’s vertical version of the rugby shirt flips the script. This vertical version flips the script. The large navy columns alternated with the thin pink pinstripes. This unexpected colour-blocking adds a lightness to a heavy look. Cotton jerseys are more comfortable, and reinforced elbows provide extra durability.

Rugby Long-Sleeve Polo Shirt

This shirt, the only one in a solid colour on this list, is a perfect example of why Madewell deserves to be loved for more than just denim. The stitching on the shirt is really unique and stands out where there would normally be a colour stripe. The shirt is a great fit to tuck in and comes in both a grey and white version if you don’t want the two-tone look.

Monogram Rugby Shirt

The reigning champ gets extra points for a killer matching set. The above rugby shirt comes with coordinating 6″ rugby shorts (110 dollars). This is my favourite, with a classic look and bold updates such as the 00 jerseys on the back. The chunky, comfortable cuffs are also a favourite. I love them both as separates or as a cohesive look. The forest green colour looks great on everyone.

Pique Dip-Dyed Rugby Shirt

What a statement! This black rugby shirt has a mustard yellow dip dye that is really cool. It adds a lot of texture and colour to the heavyweight cotton. The collar looks more like a non-rugby polo, but with the extended buttons, you can still wear it that way. You won’t find anything better if your style is more streetwear-oriented than sporty.

Sheep Rugby

Diana Red Sheep Rugby—You’ve heard about the Princess Diana black sheep sweater; now grab yours. This shirt is made by the same company that revived Lady Di’s iconic look. It features a single sheep, which pops against a fire engine red fabric. If you want to add more colour but still like the shape, then check out Rowing Blazers. They are the experts in rugby fashion and with good reason.

Voyageur Rugby Shirt

The pattern is based on woven Canadian blankets used in the fur trade of North America during the 1700s. This style has been translated to heavyweight cotton with an off-white base that makes the stiff collar stand out even more. It has a Moonrise Kingdom feel to it, which I can’t get over.
