Annotation Edit
A unique editor for professional subtitles, captions and annotations. Annotation Edit is designed to give production houses and eLearning environments a smooth subtitle workflow for Apple DVD Studio Pro / Final Cut Pro, QuickTime WebTV and broadcast. Annotation Edit can import & export DVD Studio Pro/Spruce STL, STL EBU binary (all latin characters), Final Cut Pro XML - including italic style, alignment and position, SCC closed caption (line 21) - including italic style and position. Import of DVD Studio Pro subtitle track item description xml - all languages at once, including italic.
There are numerous other unique features, such as automatic audio spotting, easy handling of Windows text files, unlimited tracks, server integration, MS Excel xml import, QuickTime 7 unicode text export and lots more.

We produce DVD's and online video with subtitles in 14 languages. Annotation Edit is our subtitle tool and works extremely well. Over the last two years the product has been updated regularly with solid improvements. Tech support issues are handled quickly and directly.
Our workflow starts with creating the English subtitles and exporting QuickTime text. The translators copy and paste their translations into the QT text file and use QuickTime Pro (7) to add the text to a QT movie right on their computer. They can adjust the timing of the subtitles in the QT text file as all languages need unique timing.
They email the final QT text file to us, we import it into Annotation Edit and proof it. Export to DVD Studio Pro .stl format and import that into DVD SP for perfect subtitles.
We also use Annotation Edit to export QT movies for conversion to H.264 online subtitles. One click and we're done.
I've had projects where we need to adjust the timing of the entire subtitle sequence due to changes in the opening title sequence. Annotation Edit allows us to type in a specific timecode or a timecode offset and everything adjusts perfectly.
The documentation is decent and tech support for questions is typically within a day. The import and export options and functions are amazing. You can bring in almost any type of file and export to every major format. We've even imported MS Word files with no problem.
I highly recommend Annotation Edit to anyone needing to subtitle videos on the Macintosh platform.
