Beauty Truths Every Woman Should Know

We know 40 is the new 30, and you’ll feel 22 when you reach the big 3-0 ( sunscreen awareness for your win! This particular milestone in beauty will be remembered for its significance. Most of us want to improve our makeup skills, find the best hairstyle for our best look, and get rid of any insecurity. The same thing, 30 is a time when gray hairs and wrinkles can suddenly appear on your radar. So for all of you approaching this imaginary-yet-important beauty deadline (and even those of us a few years beyond it), we offer 30 gems of hard-earned beauty wisdom that’ll carry you into your prime years, so you can look and feel more gorgeous than ever.

1. Skin care doesn’t have to be about your face.

You must not neglect your neck. And the backs of both your hands. Or your décolletage. These areas can look drab and dry quickly if they don’t get enough moisture and broad-spectrum sun protection. “When it is about skin care, your face stops at your nipples,” said Fiona Stiles. Don’t stop at the jawline. And don’t stop there! Keep. On. Going. Down. When your neck and décolletage age gracefully, you’ll be thankful that you did.

2. The most important hair product is the least interesting.

Healthy habits are an important part of being a successful adult. Applying a heat protector product to hair is a good idea. Doing this has no real instant-gratification effect on your style, thus why everyone is always tempted to skip it. We guarantee you that this will prevent you from getting the beautiful shampoo-commercial hair of dreams. Use protection! The right blow-dryer (see #28).

3. Foundation is not to be afraid

As you age, foundation will become less optional and more important. Beauty writer Kate Erickson says that foundation is often criticized, but she believes it to be the best thing ever. “Modern foundations have a lighter coverage than tinted moisturizers. Although people don’t believe I wear makeup, I am a proud foundation lover. Our ultimate foundation guide has tips to help you find your perfect match. You can try out one of the many incredible makeup sponges that are now available. This will allow you to conceal any skin imperfections that may arise over time. “Using a dampened Beauty Blender to create a foundation that looks flawless is the best trick,” says Nick Barose, a celebrity makeup artist.

4. All the beauty is at bedtime.

You’ve probably learned by now that putting your face in your pillow and applying a lot of makeup can lead to pimples, pink eye, and other problems. What’s worse, you may not be able to apply targeted skin care before the most long, relaxing stretch of time it can penetrate without any adverse effects from sunlight exposure. Deep moisturizing at bedtime is a great time to treat your skin, including the future lines (see #11) and treating your lips, cuticles and other problems. You can also wear your PJ pants with big-girl pants to get the job done. You’ll see results in your skin over time. Stiles states, “If you don’t apply eye cream and night moisturizer by the age of 30, it’s time to get serious about what you are doing.”

5. Things that aren’t well-rested can lead to dark circles and even more ugly.

Sleep eventually all of us will realize that we are not in college anymore and that regularly working all night can make us look tired. According to Jessica Wu , a Los Angeles dermatologist, studies show that sleep deprivation can make your skin dry and dull-looking. You should aim to get seven to nine hours of beauty sleep each night.

6. For those nights when sleep wasn’t so easy.

This is the trick that every girl in town needs to know: After you have covered your under-eye circles, apply a little highlighter to your inner corners. We have found no better way to instantly look awake and alert than this. Light-colored eyeshadow can also be used in a pinch. Check out this stunning runway twist that we saw recently at the Stella McCartney Show. It uses pale-silver eyeliner.

7. You can think of lush brows like an Instagram filter for your face.

One of the many magical effects that a full eyebrow can have on your appearance is its ability to make you look younger. Their soft texture, which softens the features and diverts attention from fine lines, is what we credit. “I gave my mother an Anastasia eyebrow pencil a few month ago and it’s so youthful-enhancing,” says Caroline Solomon, Glamour beauty assistant. You can make your brows look as old as 20 years, provided you know how to fill them in. We have tips to help you do this.

8. Sunscreen is the best anti-aging product that you can use.

Remember our previous comments about boring, healthy habits? This one was inevitable. This is a new way of thinking about sunscreen. The visible effects of sun exposure begin to show up in your 30s. Not just fine lines. Discoloration and dark patches are hard to hide. If you’re anything like me, you’ll wish you had applied more sunscreen every day as if it were your job. (And wore that sun hat every day. Ask any dermatologist and she will tell you that boring old sunscreen is her top anti-aging tip. It’s easy and hard to remember: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day on all exposed skin. Its ability to protect your skin is beyond what even the most advanced skin care products can match. Dermatologist Ranella Hirsch says, “You can prevent so many more than what you can treat.” Although we can remove some sun damage, you won’t be able to restore your unaffected 23-year-old skin. To prevent sunburns, she recommends using sunglasses and a sunscreen-based lip balm.
